Around the world at MMS
Memorial Middle School (MMS) sixth grader Clair Babbit (pictured) gets a henna tattoo at the school’s fourth annual International Day. Students enjoyed walking from booth to booth sampling foods, exploring games, and learning about different cultures. PTA members and International Day co-chairs Ivette Chapman and Ana Franco began working on the event at the beginning of the school year to ensure that more than 20 countries were represented for students to explore. Through music, games, cultural attire, food, and special performances, students learned firsthand about the various countries and cultures that make up the MMS community. Students tasted authentic foods including pierogi, a traditional food in Poland, and Choco Pies, a dessert from South Korea, played lotería, a Hispanic card game similar to bingo, and had the opportunity to get their hands painted with henna, a dye originating from Asian and African countries.
