Maestra Lebel in Romania
The Texas Medical Center Orchestra (TMCO) founder and artistic director Libi Lebel (pictured) was honored as a finalist in the Orchestra’s Conductor, an international competition in Ploiesti, Romania. Nearly 200 conductors from around the world submitted applications to attend the competition, and Lebel was one of 74 who were invited to Romania to conduct. During the semifinal round, each conductor was given a piece to conduct when they stepped onto the podium and were judged by fellow orchestra players. Lebel was named the third-place winner and received a monetary prize and invitation to return to Ploiesti to conduct future concerts. Maestra Lebel founded the TMCO in 2000 with most members being part of the Texas Medical Center community. It has grown to about 70 members, including well-known Baylor College of Medicine faculty members Drs. Ann Anderson, Daniel Musher, Tammy Kang, Robert Lynch, Rageev Raghavan, and Lynn Zechiedrich. Under Maestra Lebel’s direction, TMCO has been recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts and performed at Carnegie Hall in New York. The orchestra’s next concert is Saturday, Sept. 23 at Miller Outdoor Theatre.
