Event Roundup: What to Look Forward to this Weekend
Happy Friday! This weekend, celebrate Pride Month at events including Discovery Green's annual Rainbow on the Green, enjoy live music at Miller Outdoor Theatre, check out the reopening of Wier Park in West U, and more.
Rainbow on The Green
Rainbow on the Green – Discovery Green's annual family-friendly Pride celebration – takes place Friday, June 28, and will include an evening of performances by Houston’s own Z’maji Glamouratti and the Lone Star Discoteq, The Space Kiddettes, music producer and DJ Hiram, drag queens and Tina Turner and Chaka Khan impersonator Roxanne Collins. KPRC2’s Derrick Shore will be the emcee for the evening.
Houston Symphony’s Music of The Rolling Stones
This weekend, the Houston Symphony pays tribute to the music of The Rolling Stones. Backed by a full orchestra and rock band, lead singer Mick Adams will sing The Rolling Stones’ biggest hits, including “Satisfaction,” “Paint It Black,” “Ruby Tuesday,” and so many more. The show takes place tonight at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 2:30 p.m., in Sarofim Hall at the Hobby Center. Tickets start at $41, excluding fees.
Houston Contemporary Dance Company’s Silver Celebration
Tonight at 8:30 p.m., see an exciting night of contemporary dance for free at Miller Outdoor Theatre. In honor of their fifth season, Houston Contemporary Dance Company presents Silver Celebration with a performance from their second dance company, Houston Contemporary 2. Silver Celebration will also feature guest choreographer Brandon Coleman and Thai American artist Keerati Jinakunwiphat. Performances at Miller Outdoor Theatre are free, but tickets must be reserved.
Wier Park Reopening Celebration
After months of renovations, the City of West University Place will be reopening Wier Park. The community is invited to celebrate the reopening Saturday morning. The free celebration kicks off with a ribbon cutting at 9 a.m. and lasts until 11 a.m. Stop by for a tasty treat and a souvenir while celebrating the newly renovated park.
The Pride Run
Celebrate Houston’s vibrant and diverse community with the Pride Run on Saturday morning, starting in Hennessy Park downtown. Entry for the 5k run is $45, 10k run is $55, and 1 mile family walk is $35. Check-in begins at 6:30 a.m. The Rainbow Color Throw will be ten minutes before the start of the 10k and 5k races at 8 a.m. After the race/walk, there will be an after-celebration with refreshments and music.
46th Annual Houston Pride Parade & Festival
All day Saturday, celebrate at Pride Houston 365’s Pride Parade & Festival at City Hall in downtown. The festival starts at noon (gates open at 11 a.m.) and lasts until 6 p.m., when the parade pre-show starts. Enjoy festival performances from K. Michelle, David Archuleta, Brooke Eden, and Kayla G, plus DJs, exhibition booths, vendor booths, and more. Festival admission is $5 for adults ($10 at the gate); admission is free for those under 21 and over 55. The parade will last from 7:30-10 p.m. and is free for everyone to watch and enjoy.
Lilo and Stitch at the Children’s Museum
This Saturday, the Children's Museum in Houston will have special events inspired by Disney's Lilo and Stitch from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. See Lilo's Polynesian dance class performance, learn Polynesian crafts, take a character painting workshop to learn how to paint Stitch, and more. Activities are included in the price of general admission, $19.95 for adults and children.
Houston Dynamo vs. Charlotte FC
This Saturday at 7:30 p.m., the Houston Dynamo faces off against Charlotte FC at Shell Energy Stadium. Tickets start at $21.
Hollywood Rhapsody Produced by Texas Medical Center Orchestra
Kick off the Texas Medical Center Orchestra’s 25th season with their Hollywood Rhapsody performance at Miller Outdoor Theatre on Saturday, at 8:30 p.m. Hollywood Rhapsody will pay tribute to classic movie tunes like Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue.” Texas Medical Center Orchestra is one of the very few orchestras with its origin in the health professions. The mission of the orchestra is to provide health care professionals with a high-quality outlet for creative expression through the world of symphonic music. Tickets are free.
