More than a library
Lauren, Hazel, and Kate Rizzoli (pictured, from left) enjoyed the new Dr. Shannon Walker Library, located near the Meyerland neighborhood. In addition to rows of books, the library features a large play area and kids’ section, podcasting studios, and a technology lab. The library is named in honor of Dr. Shannon Walker, NASA’s first native Houstonian astronaut, who grew up visiting the same space when it was the Meyer Neighborhood Library. A Westbury High School graduate, Dr. Walker went on to receive three degrees from Rice University, including a Doctor of Philosophy in space physics. During the library’s grand opening, Dr. Walker recalled her childhood visits and shared her hope that kids “will come here and make lifelong friendships, not just with people but with books.” Find additional coverage at thebuzzmagazines.com by Buzz summer interns Natalie French, Anna Galan, and Gia Gaston; search "Dr. Shannon Walker Library Opens its Doors."
