Selam Nicola, Jorge Toriz, Lanie Tubbs, Ariana Bennett, Desiree Ortega

Just four years ago, Bellaire High School senior Selam Nicola immigrated to the United States from Ethiopia, knowing no English. Soon after arriving at BHS, she founded the Bellaire Multi-Lingual Students Association to help newly immigrated students like herself adapt. Due to her innovation and passion, she was selected as one of five students for Bank of America’s Student Leaders program. She received an eight-week, paid, summer internship at the Houston Food Bank this summer. Most of her internship was spent working on a fundraising project called The Hunger Game, a fundraiser competition for the Houston community with the goal of producing the most meals possible by volunteering, fundraising and hosting a food drive. Selam and students Jorge Toriz, Lanie Tubbs, Ariana Bennett and Desiree Ortega participated in the the Student Leaders Summit in Washington, D.C. Selam enjoyed hearing from Barbara Bush and speaking to District Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee about poverty and crime rate.
