With the hint of fall in the air Bellaire residents have several opportunities for some special activities through the coming months that will tease them out of the house to enjoy the cooler temperatures.

October is a month that brings to mind safety as well as fun. Fire Prevention week, Oct. 5-11, reminds us how important fire safety is in everyday life. National Night Out in Texas on Tuesday, Oct. 7 encourages neighbors to get out and meet each other in order to be the first eyes on the block should criminal activity take place. Neighbors are more aware of something wrong when they know their neighbors and can promptly report suspicious activity to the Bellaire Police Department.

If you do not have any plans for Oct. 18 there are several events that day than can keep you busy. Starting that morning is the Bellaire Police Department’s Special Olympics Fire Truck Pull on the street in front of City Hall on 7008 S. Rice. Come and watch teams raise funds for Special Olympics in a competition of pulling a 55,000-lb. fire truck. For those who wish to exercise their mind great bargains can be found just around the corner on Jessamine Street at the Friends of the Bellaire Library’s Used Book Sale beginning at 9 a.m. Local elementary schools have fall carnivals scheduled that afternoon certain to bring fall flair to your day. Save some time that weekend to visit the Pumpkin Patch at the Nature Discovery Center or just stroll through one of the many parks throughout the city.

Since pumpkins are prevalent this time of year be sure to mark your calendars for Bellaire Parks and Recreation’s Pumpkin Hunt on Oct. 23 at 4:30 pm in Loftin Park. Halloween closes out the month and safety comes back to mind – watch the use of candles, be able to see and move clearly in your costume, be careful in traffic and drivers watch for trick-or-treaters running in the streets. As always, be careful of the candy you eat and how much you eat!

Two major events round out the fall in Bellaire. The Bellaire/West U Recycles Fest takes place on Nov. 1, 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. with a focus on education for all ages and opportunities for paper shredding and electronic recycling. Just after Thanksgiving is the gem in Bellaire’s special event crown, Holiday in the Park, on the evening of Dec. 4 on the Great Lawn behind City Hall and in Loftin Park. Various local civic organizations have booths for activities; local school choirs sing seasonal songs with food and festivities surrounding you at every turn. Santa arrives on a fire truck to hear the wishes of wide-eyed children and on that evening it can be guaranteed to snow in Loftin Park.
