Come and visit Memorial High School’s annual Freshman Garage Sale this week! Displays ranging from spearguns to antique furniture to baby clothing fill the space, all donated from Memorial homes. According to Ms. Canada, co-chair of the Freshman Garage Sale, “We’ve cleaned out mansions full of furniture . . . I have $1500 Versace dresses, everything from St. John leather jackets to Ferragamo shoes.”
The purpose of the garage sale is to raise money for the freshman’s senior prom and afterparty. The sale is open to the public from Feb. 20-21 for those who want to take advantage of the great deals. On Thursday, SBISD employees get a special day to check out the sale from 2-6 p.m.
“Each department is in charge of setting their area up for display, selling it, checking people out, and we are hoping to make around $70,000,” says Jill Watson, co-chair of the Freshman Garage Sale. She gestures to the displays around her with paper signs proudly displaying the wares. There is a charming stack of stuffed animals against a wall, racks of clothes organized by age and gender, and antique furniture strategically placed by the door. In busy preparation, students and parents mill around, arranging their own exhibitions and carting furniture.
Arranging the garage sale is an amazing feat; Memorial residents have been donating to the cause since November, and the assortment of goods have really piled up. Everyone is involved, especially the 40 or so MMOB (a Memorial charity group) volunteers. Watson says, “If it weren’t for MMOB, we wouldn’t have been able to get our stuff done.” The freshmen and their parents who volunteer unload furniture, organize exhibits, and unpack boxes.
All the hard work and preparation will finally pay off when the garage sale premieres. Come and visit this fantastic treasure trove; something may strike your fancy.
