Coping with Grief During the Holiday Season
The holiday season is filled with joy, festivities and togetherness, but for some, who may have recently (or not so recently) lost loved ones, it can be filled with sadness and stress.
So today we’re revisiting an article originally published in our December 2011 issue, Surviving Grief During the Holidays by Michelle Groogan, which includes Buzz residents sharing how the holidays affected them after a loss of a loved one, and ways in which they have coped.
The article, which ran several years ago, is still very relevant today, and includes helpful, specific tips from nonprofit Bo’s Place with coping strategies during the holidays.
For example: “Acknowledge that the day is coming and it will be different.” Have family conversations about the holiday in advance to allow everyone to have time to reflect and consider their emotions. What traditions does the family want to continue? Any new or different traditions to consider for the upcoming holiday?
Also, be sure to take care of yourself. Remember that exercise can help. Spend time with supportive friends and family.
