Having friends and family over for Memorial Day next weekend? Here are some ideas of recipes to inspire you for your festivities.
Apps:
Everyone will love this Texas Bean Dip or Green Chile Dip, both from The Houston Junior League Cookbook. For a refreshing salad, consider Cathy Herr’s Arugula Salad with goat cheese and peaches. (Cathy’s recipe was originally featured in our September 2014 story “Take It Outside” On backyard bashes, including entertaining ideas.
On the grill:
If you’ll be using the grill on Memorial Day Weekend, the Ole Mole Hamburgers would be popular with a crowd, as would the Barbecued Shrimp, both from the Houston Junior League Cookbook. Or try out this Chicken Fajita Marinade recipe, provided by Betsy Murphree.
On the side:
Play with the cheeses in this recipe – try aged cheddar, goat cheese or Emmenthaler. For adult tastes, consider adding prosciutto and peas.
If you’re looking for a substantial side, consider this Texas Corn Pudding recipe or this “Out of the box” Mac 'N Cheese recipe – popular with kids and adults – both from The Junior League of Houston’s Peace Meals cookbook.
Drinks:
For those 21+, consider these Mango Margaritas or Frozen Bellinis from The Junior League of Houston’s Stop and Smell the Rosemary or White Wine Sangria from The Junior League of Houston’s Peace Meals. Or all three – it’s a long weekend, after all… Cheers!
Desserts:
For a healthier dessert, Bradlee Few, a senior at The Kinkaid School, suggests these Blueberry Orange Popsicles. (Read her recent Buzz Kidz story for more healthy recipes and to learn about how she’s working to fight childhood obesity.)
Or if you’re looking for a splurge, these Chocolate Chunk Cookies or Frozen Margarita Pie both from Peace Meals, will hit the spot.
