Electives at St. Agnes Academy
St. Agnes Academy is known for its rigorous academics and competive sports, but what most people don’t know about is its wide selection of interesting electives. With choices ranging from “the 1960s” to Human Rights, each student is sure to find an elective that they are passionate about.
Currently, I am taking Human Rights, but in the past, I have participated in Beginning Drawing, Graphic Arts and World Cinema. The course content keeps every student engaged and interested in what they are learning, no matter if the student is studying contemporary art history or learning about how things are run in a court room, like in Mock Trial. I can attest to this statement because of my experience in Human Rights. In this class, we took a field trip to visit non-profits determined to stop human trafficking. My class had the privilege of seeing and talking to the founders of these non-profit organizations first-hand, such as Kat French of Elijah Rising.
Overall, these electives provide students with valuable skills and lessons that they can use inside and outside of the classroom. I interviewed students in my grade learn more about the most popular electives offered at St. Agnes, and this is what they had to say.
Dalia Sabbagh is a junior at St. Agnes. On top of the rigorous load of honors and AP classes that she takes, she participates in the Mock Trial elective. Over the first semester of her junior year, her class prepared a court case to present in a competition in San Francisco. Dalia explained that, “I enjoyed Mock Trial because I was able to gain insight on working on a case.” It is an experience like this that amplifies the importance of these electives.
Sydney London is also a junior at St. Agnes. She, too, can attest to the demanding academic schedule of St. Agnes, but she also can attest to the variety of electives offered at St. Agnes. This year, Sydney is taking photography. I had the honor of modeling for one of her shoots required for the class, and I had the chance to speak with her about the course. “It gives me a break from my busy school day and lets me do something creative for 45 minutes,” she said. Finding an elective that you are passionate about can make school fun and interesting, and give you something to look forward to during your day.
These are just a few examples of the multiple, amazing electives offered at Saint Agnes. My advice to incoming freshman, or girls thinking about coming to St. Agnes, is to look at what is offered beyond the required courses. Our electives really make our school unique and provide it with its own special characteristics that you can’t get anywhere else.
