What to Do with the Family Over Winter Break
The holiday break is fun but can be a bit stressful for everyone. Suddenly, there are lots of people EVERYWHERE, whether it be the house, the mall or even the gym! As the break looms, I put together a list of activities you and your family can do together, both inside and outside the house for when everyone gets bored or tired of each other.
Go to Discovery Green
Discovery Green has plenty to keep the family entertained. There’s a skating rink (ICE at Discovery Green), an interactive art piece (Hello, Trees!) and beautiful Christmas lights. During the day, take advantage of the many free classes and activities happening at DG, like free yoga and Zumba.
Go see a show
Holiday classics like The Nutcracker, A Christmas Carol and other various shows at Jones Hall are playing all December and into January. Whether it’s a play, ballet, or symphony, Houston has it all.
Check out some museums
The Museum of Fine Arts has a new exhibit called HOME, a Latin American art exhibit which discusses complex ideas of families, the role of the house, abandonment, and more. For more kid-friendly topics, go to The Children’s Museum or the Houston Museum of Natural Science, all very close to each other!
Buy some concert tickets

Go for a family walk
If you’re looking to shed some of that holiday weight you’ve inevitably gained, go for a bike ride or walk with your family! Want an upgrade? Go bike in the evening to see Christmas lights!
Have a movie marathon
Christmas break is the perfect time for classic movie series. Try Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter or X-Men.
Go to a Houston sports game
Especially after the Astros win, Houston is all about sports right now. Go watch one of our pro teams play when you have the time! The Texans play the Steelers at home on Christmas day, and The Rockets play on the 22nd.
Drive to Galveston
Your closest island getaway! For some peace and quiet, there’s nothing like the beach during the winter holidays. Moody Gardens is having tons of events with Christmas lights, shows and other events, too.
