Top dogs
The Memorial Drive Elementary community celebrated the graduating fifth-grade class with their annual car parade. The tradition sends the top dogs – the fifth graders – off to their graduation party at The Forest Club. The event was different this year due to the pandemic; families decorated their cars at home and then met in the parking lot at Chapelwood United Methodist Church. With an escort from Memorial Villages police and fire departments, the cars drove down Greenbay Street to Piney Point Road, then to Smithdale Road where they drove through the MDE school bus drive. Teachers, staff, family, friends and beloved DARE officers were waiting at school to greet the parade. Moms Amy Welty, Christie Vlahakos and Lauren Eagle pulled off a successful event. Pictured is MaryAlan Reeves emerging from the sunroof, in an inflatable pink flamingo, to receive her goodie bag from Officer Frank Lerma. See “MDE’s Top Dog Parade” by Angie Frederickson for more.
