St. Agnes Student Council Succeeds Through Coronavirus
Socialization is a vital part of who we are humans as well as within the St. Agnes community. During the trying times of COVID, creativity for virtual events has been on high demand from the St. Agnes Student Council (STUCO). Our job is to keep the community bonded and together in a fun joyous spirit during the pandemic. No matter if we are 6 feet or 20 miles apart, we strive to help students develop friendships that will last a lifetime at St. Agnes Academy.
The work of the St. Agnes Student Council began before the school year by having the STUCO retreat. The council met three times during the week via Zoom. The Zooms may have been multiple hours of fun, but they were jam-packed with committee and grade level planning and community building games and Kahoots.
Daryn Ezikeauzor (‘20) and Beatriz Eade (‘20) led the entire Student Council with inspiring words. Though St. Agnes faces challenges in the sociality of students, Daryn views that her role is to be the glue that holds us together. When asked how the Student Council will encourage other students to participate in events, Daryn said, “We know that our attitude definitely rubs off on our school, so when we are optimistic, present, and utilize all means to get the others involved, it definitely inspires others to replicate this behavior, and creates a more engaging and active environment in our school!” Technology is being used to bond and excite students in different ways, starting with the Student Council itself.
Some of the gradewide plans have already come to fruition and some we just can’t wait to see. The St. Agnes Sophomore Student Council Class has recently hosted their first grade-wide game night! Joy Stephan (‘23) headed the Friday night fun by choosing a fun Kahoot for everyone to play. Student Council members were encouraged to bring a friend and the Zoom filled up quickly. Then the students were broken up into multiple breakout rooms in which they were given a variety of games to choose from. They played games such as Bingo, Sribblio, Would you rather, and cards.
The positive reaction to the game night has encouraged the St. Agnes Student Council to host a movie night where students will vote on movies to watch and be able to chat during the movies. Though we may not be able to see everyone face-to-face, like a virus our love and community keep spreading.
The theme of the 2020-2021 school year is “stay curious.” As a community, we strive to remain open to new relationships and ideas. Recent Student Council meetings have ended with many ideas to enliven this school year. Ideas such as a pet fashion show, faculty family feud, and weekly DIYS encourage comedy and creativity in our community. The St. Agnes community has grown stronger through the different perspectives brought to the St. Agnes Student Council. No matter how far apart, we will always be together through our love of St. Agnes.
