St. Agnes at Steps for Students
As a school rooted in Dominican faith, community is a huge part of St. Agnes Academy. Whether it’s extracurriculars, schoolwork, or social events, St. Agnes is always looking for ways to encourage community bonding with our fellow Dominicans.
For some of our students this month, this meant venturing beyond our usual circle and getting involved with the greater Catholic school community within Houston. On Feb. 12, St. Agnes sent 18 students and faculty members to participate in the annual Steps for Students event, a 5k run/walk to support Catholic education within the Archdiocese of Houston/Galveston. The event is more than just a fundraiser, though - it’s a chance to connect and interact with our fellow Catholic students.
“This year was the first time I've done Steps for Students,” says Thierry Chu (22). “It was a small but meaningful way to support Catholic education, and it was super rewarding to spend my morning with St. Agnes teachers and students. Experiencing that type of God-focused community was really life-giving.”
Though the event was early on a Saturday morning and a track meet prevented more signups, St. Agnes students' spirits were high!
“St. Agnes Academy’s participation in Steps for Students was small but mighty!” says Sister Jane, our head of school. “Everyone knew Academy participants were there because our cheering was loud and proud.”
Our numbers may have been small, but the meaning of the event certainly wasn’t. Everybody had a fun, meaningful time representing St. Agnes and mingling with other Catholic high school students. Being one of the four Dominican pillars, community means everything to St. Agnes and allows us to truly shine in environments outside our immediate school circle. Steps for Students was a fantastic display of this, and we can’t wait for next year’s event!
