Event Roundup: What to Look Forward to This Weekend
Happy Friday! It’s International Dance Day and Arbor Day, and we've got plenty of ways to celebrate. Celebrate dance with the Houston Ballet Spring Showcase, or enjoy the beautiful outdoors with a movie at Miller Outdoor Theatre, an exhibit at Bayou Bend Gardens, a Sunday Concert at the Houston Botanic Garden, and more!
Houston Ballet Spring Showcase
Houston Ballet Academy’s annual Spring Showcase returns for the first time in two years to the Cullen Theater in the Wortham Theater Center this weekend. Tonight’s show will start at 7 p.m., and Saturday’s show will start at 2 p.m. The showcase features Academy students from Level 1 through Houston Ballet II performing an array of excerpts from the Academy repertory, including Stanton Welch’s Brigade, Mikhail Fokine’s Chopiniana, and concluding with Welch’s Studies. Tickets start at $35.
Fiddler on the Roof at the Hobby Center
Come see this limited engagement of the theatrical classic Fiddler on the Roof at the Hobby Center this weekend. Shows are at 8 p.m. tonight and Saturday, and 7:30 p.m. on Sunday. Matinee performances are at 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets start at $30. The musical is directed by Tony Award-winner Bartlett Sher, and choreographed by the acclaimed Israeli choreographer Hofesh Shechter. Fiddler on the Roof is the heartwarming story of fathers and daughters, husbands and wives, and life, love and laughter.
Movie at Miller: Encanto
Tonight at 8:15 p.m., join other Houstonians for a magical outdoor movie experience at Miller Outdoor Theatre. Bring the whole family down for this adventure with magic and music. Encanto tells the story of an extraordinary family named the Madrigals. This animated movie features songs written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, and is rated good for ages 6 and up.
Houston Zoo’s 100th Birthday Bash
The Houston Zoo is celebrating its 100-year anniversary with a birthday party extravaganza tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Upon arrival to the day-long celebration, you will be greeted by animal ambassadors and learn how they can help save their wild counterparts, along with other surprises in the McGovern Front Plaza. The event will also feature: guest speakers at the Reflection Pool, family-friendly entertainment, keeper chats every half hour at different animal habitats, live ice carving, and more.
Puppies for Breakfast
Enjoy the cutest event Houston has to offer at Market Square Park on Saturday morning. This free event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. brings everything “DOG” to one place. The 11th Annual Puppies for Breakfast is guaranteed to be the biggest pup party you’ve ever experienced. This year’s event comes jam-packed with 40+ vendors, dog-centric brands and creative pop-up shops (plus the food trucks for human counterparts).
Bellaire’s Annual City-Wide Garage Sale
Bellaire’s Annual City-Wide Garage Sale will be held on Saturday. On this day, and this day only, the permit requirement is waived for any Bellaire resident who wishes to hold a garage sale at their home. Houston Dynamo v. Austin FC
The Houston Dynamo (ranked 7th) goes head-to-head with Austin FC (ranked 2nd) at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets start at $18 for this game at PNC Stadium.
The Evolving Lives of Objects at Bayou Bend Gardens
During this Saturday afternoon of free programs at Bayou Bend, see how curators, conservators, and historians view museum collections from a unique perspective. This event from 1-5 p.m. covers topics such what an altered chair can reveal about its time prior to entering a museum collection; the secrets an artifact may yield during conservation; and how understanding a work of art changes with knowledge about contributions made by historically marginalized artisans. The afternoon’s spotlight lecture will be accompanied by a quilt viewing, a tour of relevant objects in the Bayou Bend Collection, and video presentations from MFAH curators and conservators.
Houston Pride LGBT+ June Celebration 2022 Kickoff Party
Kick off the Houston Pride LGBT+ Celebration Season on Saturday at the 2022 Kickoff Party. The party will be at JR’s Bar & Grill from 7-10 p.m., and feature a theme reveal, the Grand Marshal Winners, big announcements, live performances, upcoming pride events, and more.
Sunday Concert Series at the Houston Botanic Garden
Back by popular demand, the Houston Botanic Garden is hosting its second-to-last Sunday Concert of 2022. This Sunday, celebrate the sounds and sights of the 1960s with music from The Fab 5, a Beatles and ‘60s tribute band. The Sunday Concert Series features a family-friendly festival atmosphere in the shade of a pine tree grove. The concert is from 3-5 p.m., and is included in the cost of general admission. Ticket prices on Sundays are $15 for adults, and $10 for students and children age 3 and older. Attendees are welcome to bring their own lawn chairs for the concert.
