Recent high school graduates Abby Konicki, Molly Vestal, Alexis Bartley, Mary-Ellen Abshire, Alex Konicki, and Abby Vollrath (from left) earned the Girl Scout Gold Award. Bellaire’s Troop 21521 began in 2010 with 12 girls. Today, these six girls are still together and have earned the highest award in Girl Scouting. They are now among the five percent of Girl Scouts who earn the prestigious award after spending a year researching and creating programs to address unmet needs in the community. Abby Konicki (St. Pius X High School) created a used uniform room at St. Pius X to provide affordable uniforms to students. Molly Vestal (Bellaire High School) created guidebooks for senior citizens in retirement communities to help make technology easier to understand and less intimidating. Alexis Bartley (St. Agnes Academy) partnered with Ronald McDonald House to provide education about volunteer opportunities and created infrastructure improvements for the house’s main quarters. Mary-Ellen Abshire (Saint Thomas’ Episcopal School) created healthy cooking workshops that she presented in virtual format for residents of the Port of Houston neighborhood. She also raised funds to provide Chromebooks to participants so they could participate in the workshops. Alex Konicki (St. Pius X High School) created a health room at St. Pius X for students to access general health supplies or rest and recover from headaches or other mild ailments. Abby Vollrath (St. Agnes Academy) collaborated with sports psychologists and fellow student athletes to create a website, informational video, and handouts to provide access to mental-health resources for female student athletes.
