This weekend brings us events to commemorate 9/11 and JFK’s historic “We Choose to Go to the Moon” speech, delivered here at Rice University 60 years ago, plus the season home opener for the Texans and more.

México en el Corazón
Immerse yourself in the colors, artistry, and music of Mexico with Mariachis, folkloric ballet, and more at Discovery Green, Friday, 7-10 p.m. This showcase of traditional Mexican culture features more than 50 performers in stunning traditional costumes as part of the second North American tour presented by NAIMA. Local performers and a live presentation of El Grito create a magical evening of culture and community. Free to attend.
Fall ExtravaDance at Miller Outdoor Theatre
Fall ExtravaDance #YayDance, produced by Houston Metropolitan Dance Center, brings together an array of dance genres, music, and movement at Miiller Outdoor Theatre, Friday, 8 p.m. Featuring one of Houston’s newest dance companies, Social Movement Contemporary Dance, HMDC activates their new “Made In Houston” programming, designed to connect Houston dance artists and support choreographic development. The evening will include special dance and music collaborations created specifically for Miller Outdoor Theatre.
9/11 Days of Service
In observance of the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, nonprofit Volunteer Houston invites the community to transform the anniversary of 9/11 into a day of serving those in need. Local nonprofits will be hosting service projects across the city. Find a list of opportunities here. Volunteer Houston
‘We Choose to Go to the Moon’ 60th Anniversary Celebration Events
On September 12, 1962, President John F. Kennedy delivered the famous “We Choose to Go to the Moon” speech at Rice University. In commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the iconic speech, NASA and Rice University are presenting a variety of special events Sept. 10-12. 9/11 Heroes Run
The Houston 9/11 Heroes Run, a 5K to honor the heroes of 9/11 and all veterans, takes place on Saturday at City Hall. Opening Ceremonies start at 7:30 a.m.
Mid-Autumn Festival at Children’s Museum Houston
Each year, the Vietnamese Culture and Science Association partners with the Children’s Museum Houston to bring the Mid-Autumn celebration to the city of Houston. Celebrate Mid-Autumn Fest through activities, storytelling, lion dance, contests, and more on Saturday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
Houston Dynamo vs. Sporting KC
The Dynamo takes on the Sporting KC at PNC, Saturday, 7:30 p.m.

City of Bellaire 9/11 Memorial Service and Steel Dedication
An 11-foot portion of the World Trade Center I-beam was donated by the Rubenstein Family Foundation in partnership with the Houston Fire Museum to the City of Bellaire in 2017 to share this piece of our American history with the community. With the help of the Bellaire Southwest Houston Rotary Club and Piper Whitney Construction, the City of Bellaire presents this piece of history to the community. There will be a service and dedication on Sunday at 2 p.m. in the parking lot between the Bellaire Fire Station and the Bellaire Library. Neighbors are welcome to visit the memorial and take time to reflect.
