As a health-science curriculum centered school, DeBakey holds many opportunities for students to explore careers in the field of health professionals. One of the most popular clubs at DeBakey is HOSA, Health Occupations Students of America. This year, over 40 DeBakey students qualified to compete at HOSA’s 2023 state conference at the Kalahari Resort in Round Rock, Texas.

Known for its large water parks and arcades, Kalahari gave students the opportunity to have a mini-vacation in the middle of the school year. Emily Messina, who competed in the category Forensic Sciences and won 1st place, shared her experience at HOSA State. “My favorite part was definitely the waterpark experience. I went last year and this year was so much more fun. I didn’t make it [to international’s] last year, so I feel excited that I made it this year!”

Hussein Maleki, a junior who competed in the Behavioral Health Science Related Events, also learned valuable things from being in HOSA. “I have learned that you have to work hard, be dedicated, and committed. If you study, you’ll be fine. [HOSA] was a very great opportunity.” A great opportunity it was indeed, as many DeBakey students will be competing at the International Leadership Conference in Dallas, Texas in June.

The HOSA state conference brought DeBakey students great learning experiences and leadership skills. But more importantly, it brought unforgettable memories! The Kalahari Indoor Waterpark was a favorite for many of the HOSA competitors.
