Labor Day Weekend Roundup
Happy Friday and Labor Day Weekend! It’s the last official weekend of summer, and there’s lots to do around town, including:
Party at the Pavilion Featuring Captain Fantastic (Elton John Tribute)
Kick off Labor Day with Bellaire neighbors for a free outdoor concert held at Bellaire Town Square, featuring Captain Fantastic, an Elton John tribute. A food truck favorite will be onsite for purchase. Party at the Pavilion takes place on Friday, 7 p.m.
Luna Li and Dengue Fever in Concert Produced By Asia Society Texas Center
Asia Society Texas brings a night of incredible music by stand-out artists, including Luna Li’s gorgeous indie rock dreamscapes and Dengue Fever’s electric update of Cambodian psych-rock. The free performances take place at Miller Outdoor Theatre, Friday, 8 p.m.
Houston Fringe Festival: Anything Goes
The Houston Fringe Festival's signature performing arts showcase mash-up, Anything Goes, comes to MATCH Houston on Friday, 8 p.m., featuring a range of performances from contemporary dance to original music to spoken word to comedy. Tickets start at $15.
Galveston Island Wine Festival
This year, the Galveston Island Wine Festival is taking place at Moody Gardens. In addition to tasting fine wines, visitors can experience the Rainforests of the World, the newly removed Aquarium Pyramid, the 3D and 4D Special Effects Theater, and more. The festival takes place Friday-Sunday. See the website for the schedule and ticket pricing.
Houston Astros vs. New York Yankees
The Astros take on the Yankees in a three-game series at Minute Maid. The schedule is as follows: Friday, 7:10 p.m.; Saturday, 6:10 p.m.; Sunday, 6:10 p.m. Tickets start at $39.
Pride Galveston
Pride Galveston takes place Friday-Sunday and includes a weekend full of fun and festive events. On Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., there will be a Beach Bash at East Beach.
Powerful Poets at Children’s Museum Houston
Houston-area poets, including current Houston Poet Laureate and Houston Youth Poet Laureate, will inspire with poetry readings. Plus, there will be hands-on poetry workshops, in addition to a panel and open Q&A with poets. The event takes place at the Children’s Museum, 11:30-3:30 p.m., and is general admission.
Back 2 School Bash at M-K-T
Houston Plant Market teamed up with M-K-T to create a school-supply drive with Be A Resource (BEAR Houston). Browse over 35 local plant and artisan vendors, participate in a fun scavenger hunt, and be part of the inaugural school-supply drive in collaboration with BEAR Houston. The market event takes place on Saturday, 5-9 p.m. at M-K-T.
Mozart By Moonlight Produced By Mercury Chamber Orchestra
Mercury Chamber Orchestra presents Mozart By Moonlight featuring some of the composer’s most popular music, at Miller Outdoor Theatre, Saturday, 8 p.m. This free performance will be accompanied by visual elements that will enhance the audience’s viewing and listening experience.
Galveston Family Beach Challenge
The Galveston Beach Family Challenge consists of 14 stations that allow family members and friends to compete one-on-one or as a family against another participating family for chances to win up to $2,000 in prizes. The stations are designed for ages 8+. The family-fun event takes place at East Beach on Sunday, 10 a.m., and is free to participate.
Kemah Boardwalk’s End of Summer Fireworks
On Sunday, enjoy a day full of live music (1-10 p.m.) on the Boardwalk followed by a fireworks show at 9 p.m.
Labor Day Live Music at CityCentre
Sean Heyl performs Pop & Yacht favorites on Labor Day, 6-9 p.m., in CityCentre’s plaza.
Labor Day at Lone Star Flight Museum
The Lone Star Flight Museum will celebrate Labor Day with a range of activities for the whole family – plus, free hot dogs (while they last). See some incredible aircraft, explore out-of-this-world exhibits, and participate in crafts and other fun activities throughout the day. The Labor Day event takes place on Monday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and is general admission.
“Sharks! The Meg, The Monsters, & The Myths” Exhibit at HMNS

“Pipilotti Rist: Pixel Forest and Worry Will Vanish” at MFAH
This weekend is also the last chance to view “Pipilotti Rist: Pixel Forest and Worry Will Vanish” at MFAH. The special exhibit brings toward two experiential works – “Pixel Forest,” an installation of thousands of hanging LED lights, and “Worry Will Vanish,” a two-channel video projection that makes viewers on a dream-like journey. The exhibit is open through Monday.
Houston Restaurant Weeks 2023
This weekend also marks last call to participate in Houston Restaurant Weeks, the annual foodie event that benefits the Houston Food Bank. Dine out for a good cause this weekend.
