Event Roundup: What to Look Forward to this Weekend
Happy Friday! Summer officially kicked off with the summer solstice on Thursday. Celebrate summer this weekend with these Houston happenings:
Summer Solstice at Rothko Chapel with the Apollo Chamber Players
Spend an afternoon at the Rothko Chapel with captivating music by the Apollo Chamber Players. The performance features six diverse pieces by Phillip Glass, Marty Regan, Agustin Bardi, Hector Del Curto, and Astor Piazzolla. The Houston-based Apollo Chamber Players are the recipients of Chamber Music America’s prestigious Residency Partnership award and have performed for sold-out audiences at Carnegie Hall. This performance will take place today at noon and admissions are “pay what you can tickets,” $10-25, with in-person bench seating.
Sunset Bingo at Levy Park
Bring a blanket and enjoy music from DJ Del Sur while vying to win bingo prizes at Levy Park! Gaspachos Mexican Bites and Mobile Cat will have food and beverage and Kind Ice Cream will be offering a 10% discount to those who show their bingo cards. This event takes place every Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. One bingo packet, with eight games, is $10.
International Day of Yoga at Discovery Green
Presented by the Counsel General of India, this annual summer solstice event brings together yoga, Bollywood dancing, and a labyrinth walk. This free event will take place today at Discovery Green from 6 to 9 p.m..
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Movie Screening at Bagby Park
Bring your blanket and enjoy a free screening of “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” under the stars today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Bagby Park. To celebrate Juneteenth weekend and Make Music Day Houston, June’s Movie Night will include: a live musical performance at 5 p.m., followed by a viewing of the Midtown Juneteenth art installation artist talk video and a chance to meet the artist at 6 p.m. La Calle Tacos will be serving their taco menu and the first 40 guests receive free popcorn.
Friday Night Fireworks
Enjoy music themed fireworks every Friday night in June and July at Kemah Boardwalk! The firework show starts at 9:30 p.m. and is free to the public. You can also view the show on Boardwalk Beast Fireworks Cruise, with tickets sold at $40.
Urban Harvest Saturday Farmers Market at St. John's School
One of the largest farmers markets in Houston, Urban Harvest features more than 100 local vendors and producers within 100 miles every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. The market and parking is free.
A Juneteenth Celebration at Bayou Bend
To commemorate Juneteenth this past Wednesday, the Bayou Bend Collection and Garden is hosting a family-friendly program focused on the impact of Black history on Saturday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. The celebration will begin at 10:30 a.m. with a poetic performance from the Express Children’s Theater of Houston of “Rhyme and Reason.” At 12:15 p.m., visitors are invited to learn about Bayou Bend’s recent acquisition of a needlework sampler paired with an art-making workshop. The celebration is free to attend.
Fancy Nancy: The Musical
Head down to Main Street Theater to enjoy their production of Fancy Nancy: The Musical based on the popular books by Jane O’Connor. On Saturday, there will be showtimes at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Tickets begin at $18 and this production is recommended for preschool-aged and older.
Houston's New Faces of Pride Festival and Parade
Join festivalgoers in downtown for Houston’s New Faces of Pride Festival and Parade! The festival will be held on Saturday from 12 to 6 p.m., headlined by Billy Gilman, Lauren Sanderson, and Chris Housman. Tickets are $5. Following the festival, there will be a free parade from 7:30 to 10 p.m.
Mean Girls Movie Screening at Discovery Green
Bring your blankets and lawn chairs to a free screening of the 2024 Mean Girls film at Discovery Green. The screening begins at 7 p.m. and will run till 9 p.m. While the screening is free, you do need to register for tickets.
Texas Music Festival Orchestra, In Honor of Susan Farb Morris
The Immanual and Helen Olshan Texas Musical Festival has dedicated its performance on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in memory of longtime supporter Susan Farb Morris. Susan, known as the PR Fairy, was a fervent supporter of the Texas Music Festival and many other local organizations and causes. General admission is $30.
The Kinsey African American Art & History Collection at Holocaust Museum Houston
This is the last weekend to see the Kinsey African American Art & History Collection, on display at Holocaust Museum Houston. Considered one of the most comprehensive surveys of African American history and culture outside of the Smithsonian Institutions, the exhibition features the shared treasures amassed by Shirley and Bernard Kinsey during their five decades of marriage. This collection includes masterful paintings and sculptures, photographs, rare books, letters, manuscripts and more that offer a well-rounded look at the African American experience and provide new perspectives on the nation’s history and culture. The exhibit is included in the price of general admission: $22 for adults, $16 for seniors, and free for students.
Cyclone of Memories: An AstroWorld Exhibition at Houston Toy Museum
This collection, at the Houston Toy Museum this weekend only, features rare souvenirs and memorabilia curated by Houstonian and self-proclaimed pop culture historian, Donald Hayes. The general public has never seen many of the items on display in the collection, and the exhibit celebrates what made AstroWorld so important to Houston’s culture and tourism. This exhibit is open today from noon to 6 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. General admission is $14.
