This weekend in Houston is full of sports, dancing, art, nature, and more (as always, please check individual sites or social media for any weather-related updates). Plus, today is the Opening Ceremony for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
2024 Olympics
Today is Opening Ceremony for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. NBC will televise and Peacock will stream the Olympics. Opening Ceremony is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. Paris time (12:30 p.m. CST). NBC's live coverage will begin at 11 a.m. CST. Watch the Opening Ceremony, and all Olympic events, via Peacock or NBCOlympics.com, NBC.com, the NBC app, and the NBC Olympics app. Cheer on Team USA, including some Houstonians such as Kelsey Bing, goalkeeper for Team USA Field Hockey.
2024 Olympics Opening Ceremony Watch Party at POST Houston
POST Houston is offering a watch party for the 2024 Olympics Opening Ceremony. Watch the Opening Ceremony on the jumbo LED screens in POST Market and on the jumbo LED Screen in the X Atrium, 12:30-4:15 p.m. There will also be kid-friendly activities in the X Atrium such as a fun photo opportunity at an Olympic podium with Fotolab, free face painting, balloon artists, delicious food, and drinks during the event. This event is free with RSVP and open to the public of all ages. Throughout the Olympics, July 26-Aug. 11, the majority of the Games will be on the TVs at POST.
Faux-Lympics at Children's Museum Houston
Children's Museum Houston celebrates the 2024 Olympic Games by offering the Faux-Lympics, a series of fun and friendly games. The Faux-Lympics Games kicks off today with a Break Free Worldwide Spotlight Perforamnce, at 3 and 4 p.m. Breakdancing is now an official Olympic sport. Learn about its origins and learn some iconic moves.
Texans’ Training Camp
Houston Texans' Training Camp presented by Xfinity includes kicked off this week and includes today and tomorrow at 9 a.m. Gates open at 8 a.m. Each open practice will include fan giveaways such as cooling and jersey towels at the Xfinity tent, player autograph sessions, influencer appearances, and full Houston Texans Cheerleader signings and legends appearances. Some practices will also feature special events, such as a joint practice with the Los Angeles Rams and exclusive retail launches.
Jurassic Quest
Dino fans will love this popular, family-friendly event held at NRG Center. Observe a herd of life-sized dinosaurs including Apatosaurus, Spinosaurus, and an incredible T. Rex! There will be opportunities to play with baby dinos, excavate fossils, train a raptor, enjoy arts & crafts, live shows, rides, and more. The show takes place Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m., and Sunday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Tickets are $22.
Astros vs. Dodgers
The Astros are facing the Los Angeles Dodgers here in Houston this weekend. It will be a three-game series with a game on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The schedule is as follows: Friday, July 26 at 7:10 p.m., Saturday, July 27 at 6:10 p.m., and Sunday, July 28 at 1:10 p.m. Tickets are available to purchase online.
CAMH Summer Community Celebration
The Contemporary Arts Museum is hosting a Summer Celebration for the community, Saturday, 1-4 p.m. You will be able to explore current exhibitions, including Theaster Gates: The Gift and The Renege and Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow. There will be multiple hands-on activities such as a workshop where you can make mermaid tails, a text collage activity, and a performance with Mermaid Nikki of Odysea Mermaids, and community partners will lead visitors through a historical discussion about Freedmen's Town. Admission to the celebration is free and open to the public.
Gardening for Butterflies
Learn the best ways to support butterflies in your backyard. Instructor Kelsey Low is teaching a class on Saturday morning at the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center, 10 a.m.-12 p.m. An exploration of the Butterfly Bungalow will also be open for guests, weather permitting. Tickets are $20 for members and $35 for nonmembers.
Neon Night Out! at the Children's Museum
On Saturday night, 6-9 p.m., Children’s Museum Houston becomes a playground for the big kids - those 21+! Step back in time for a neon night of nostalgia at the Children's Houston Museum. Put on your best retro ’80s attire and join for an evening of fun exhibits, throwback tunes, light bites, and cocktails. Tickets are $50.
Foraging: Taste a Bit of Nature
The Houston Botanic Garden is inviting guests to experience Houston’s biodiversity with its lush greenery this Saturday from 6:30-8 p.m. There will be a guided walk, picking and eating wild plants, and opportunities to learn about the medicinal and culinary uses of the plants in the garden. As you forage, you will see the twilight of Houston’s urban landscape in the garden. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children.
Leagues Cup: Houston Dynamo vs. Atlas FC
Cheer on the Houston Dynamo as they play against Atlas FC as part of the Leagues Cup, Saturday, 7 p.m. Tickets start at $21.
Family Day at Rienzi: “Shakespeare Everywhere”
Rienzi collaborates with the Houston Shakespeare Festival (HSF) to host a Family Day in celebration of HSF’s upcoming 50th anniversary at Miller Outdoor Theatre on Sunday, 1-5 p.m. This event spotlights Rienzi’s Collection and Shakespeare's Second Folio. The HSF presents a variety of Shakespeare activities throughout Rienzi’s house and gardens. There will be an art-making activity where you can create your own quill pen, self-guided tours of Rienzi, a Children’s Shakespeare workshop, and more. This event is free and open to the public.
