The pressure was on for a position in office. And I don’t mean office for the White House. I mean for the Briarwood Student Executive Council. Every year, Briarwood holds Student Council elections three weeks into school. This year, 12 candidates were running for only six spots! Two weeks of constant and heated campaigning and pressure to win one of the spots consumed each of them.
Students roamed the school halls looking for votes, talking to kids of all ages, striving to make connections with them, hoping for votes. Four sophomores, six juniors, and two seniors ran for these positions.
Just before each election, at a school-wide assembly, candidates present speeches and are asked a series of questions. They varied from humorous to serious such as “Why do you think you should be on student council?” “What is your biggest fear in life?” “What has been your involvement in student body in the past?” “If you could trade places with someone, who would it be and why?” “What would your super power be if you could have one?” and “Why should we vote for you?” Some candidates said they could feel the pressure, but they knew at this point it was too late for stage fright.
Sarah Cate Jones had this to say about the campaigning: “ I made sure to stalk the middle school kids in the hallways because they’re an easy crowd.”
“I made sure I was on a first-name basis with everyone, and I concentrated on connecting with them,” Katrina Day said.
Later that Friday, the student body voted for their favorite six candidates. Those winners can look forward to being very preoccupied this school year. They can look forward to planning the Powder Puff game, Spirit Week, and community service projects with different charities, such as WHAM, House of Tiny Treasures, CAPS and many more. Congratulations to the winners!
