Lee’s Fried Chicken & Doughnuts
Fried-chicken spots are among the many restaurants popping up lately in the neighborhood. However, they seem to disappear as quickly as they arrive. I believe one entry, Lee’s Fried Chicken & Doughnuts, is poised for a long stay. Stop by in the morning for their hand-cut, fermented-before-frying, fluffy doughnuts, such as their “Raised Praline Bacon and Caramel Icing” or “Raised Mexican Chocolate Icing.” But come back after 11 a.m. for exceptional fried chicken. With a golden, crunchy crust and warm, tender, moist chicken, each bite is pure pleasure. The simple menu includes chicken boxes in several sizes (with accompanying sides), plus wings, chicken tenders and chicken sandwiches. Side dishes are macaroni salad, cole slaw, creamed corn, sour cream mashed potatoes (my personal favorite), potato salad, bacon jalapeño cream gravy and fresh fruit. This place has become quite popular, so come early, and you might even get place to sit on a shiny wooden bench or an iron stool in the snug dining area. But there is good news – a patio is coming soon.
