Buzzing About Murals: Montrose Edition
With all the buzz about murals, Buzz summer interns set out to check out some of the mural walls out for themselves. This week, Karina Arnold, Jordan Miller-Mandel and Sophia Wayne spent time in the Montrose area, admiring the vibrant colors and uniqueness of each mural. They look forward to visiting a new Houston neighborhood next week, and share their favorites here.
Sophia’s Pick:
Vibrant mural by Skeez 181 featuring bright colors and geometric shapes.
Location: 1643 Westheimer Rd.
“This was no ordinary mural. This mural not only covered one of the walls of the Pavement Houston Clothing store, but these colorful geometric shapes stretched from one side of the store all the way to the entrance of the store, even covering the ceiling outside of the store. As we walked on to the next mural, I could not stop staring at this one, the brightly colored shapes all blended against the wall perfectly. It fascinated me.”
Karina’s Pick:
'90s Cartoon mural by @al_win_
Location: 1627 Westheimer Rd.
“I faced a wall of nostalgia: The Powerpuff Girls, Plankton from Spongebob, Bloo from Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends. As a child, watching cartoons before school was my morning ritual. This mural had me recalling my favorite quotes and episodes. I was left standing with a smile on my face and mind full of memories.”
Jordan’s Pick:
Music mural by Rene Fernandez
Location: 314 Westheimer Rd. (on the back wall of #’s)
"When coming across the mural you instantly saw a piece of music history, the many faces from David Bowie, Blondie to Robert Smith from The Cure. You got a little flashback of the music from the '80s and '90s. It was well painted and you could tell who was who in an instant. Growing up listening to this music and seeing these iconic figures on the wall done so tastefully reminded me what music is all about.”
