The unique aspects and traditions of HSPVA are all to do with getting students to express themselves artistically, not only within art area classes, but in special events and activities held at the school. From the annual all-school musicals to open houses for prospective students, HSPVA allows students to be fully involved. Students hold the freedom to express leadership as well among student-led events, and the school provides a stage for them to do so.
One of these student-led traditions are the unique Happenings that occur at the school about once every two months. They are compilations of performances, comedy acts, contests, and more, which truly bring the HSPVA community together. These events are planned, organized and written by two senior chairs, who set up open auditions for any students who may wish to perform. Happenings take place during lunch and provide a way for students to showcase their talents to their fellow artists.
Over the fall semester at HSPVA, we enjoyed a back-to-school happening, a Halloween happening and a holiday happening. We experienced vocal and instrumental acts, skits, Halloween costume contests, dance performances to holiday music medleys and much more. They were packed with fun acts and celebrated that time of year at the school. The happenings are enjoyed by students, teachers, faculty and even parents and alumni on occasion, and truly represent the lively, unique, and creative atmosphere at HSPVA.
