Journalism Field Trip

On May 24, Emery’s Journalism program and its students took half of the day to go scope out the Houston Chronicle and its facility. This was an extremely beneficial opportunity for students looking to pursue journalism or a career in writing. Juniors and sophomores taking Journalism were able to see one of Houston’s most proficient newspaper facilities, an excellent representation of the broadcasting industry.

The trip gave kids an idea of what their careers would look like if they were to pursue journalism in the future. It was an amazing experience because we got to interact with people who have extensive knowledge about meticulously reporting and writing stories with accurate sources and quotes. Many students asked about how sources can be labeled as reliable, and the tour guide said that each reporter goes through a very thorough process to ensure that content is totally accurate. Also, it was emphasized during the tour that the Chronicle is very careful to not overstep in sensitive situations and is very ethical, something that is often stereotyped against within the broadcasting industry.

It was so interesting to see the various sections of news that the Chronicle covers every day. Not only are the programs at Emery very resourceful, but the experiences we attain out of classrooms actually contribute to further and expand upon our interests for jobs in the future.
