Women of substance
The second annual Women of Substance luncheon benefiting the Mission of Yahweh homeless shelter for women and children took place at the River Oaks Country Club. More than 450 guests gathered to support 12 honorees and raise more than $400,000. The event was dedicated to First Lady Barbara Bush, who had accepted the position of honorary chair again before she passed away. Pierce Bush dedicated the luncheon to his grandmother. Honorary chairs were Rose Cullen and Regina Rogers, and chair was Susan Arnoldy Hansen. PBS anchor Ernie Manouse read a letter from author Barbara Taylor Bradford about her relationship with her friend Barbara Bush. Paul-David Van Atta, event producer, said Taylor’s book, Women of Substance, was the inspiration for the luncheon. The 2018 Women of Substance are Anita Smith, Joyce Pankonien, Beth Madison, Betty Hrncir, Mady Kades, Kim Moody, Susan Sarofim, Joan Schnitzer-Levy, Kappy Muenzer, Sidney Faust, Lotty Gautschi and Martha Turner.
