Spotlighting service

Volunteer Houston, a program of Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston, celebrated 45 years of service at an anniversary dinner held at Hilton Americas-Houston. This inaugural event raised over $100,000 for the program. The highlight of the evening was an address by Robert M. Gates, the 22nd secretary of defense, former president of Texas A&M University and former director of the Central Intelligence Agency. It was followed by a fireside chat with his daughter Eleanor Gates, director of Volunteer Houston. A Daily Point of Light award was presented to philanthropist Regina Rogers by Neil Bush, chairman of Points of Light. Melanie Lawson, ABC 13 news anchor, was the emcee, and her father, the Rev. William A. Lawson, provided the invocation. Volunteer Houston connects people and groups with nonprofits; see volunteerhouston.org.
