Virtual Student Council Election at DeBakey

As the 2020 U.S. presidential election came to an end, the freshmen student council campaign had only just begun. As a virtual election, little social interaction between students was allowed. But this didn’t prevent the chats from exploding with promises and goals made by my fellow freshmen candidates. As the anticipated election day approached, the candidates were as competitive as ever.

The presidential speeches took place online during lunchtime. Each candidate shared their visions for the virtual year and why they would be the most qualified to represent our class while their fliers were presented on the screen. Following the speeches was the Freshmen Presidential Debate hosted by the DeBakey Debate team. Candidates were given specific amounts of time to respond to each question before their mic was muted. Later, the presidential candidates were able to pose questions to each other. By that time, most freshmen students had an understanding of who they wanted to vote for.

Election day came and went. The anticipation grew. The results were released on Tuesday, Nov. 10. Candidates congratulated one another for their hard work and dedication. Congrats to all who participated!
