The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is a fundraising event in Houston that aims to raise money for Alzheimer’s research to find a cure for the disease.
Christina M. organized a team consisting of people from BIS Houston for her CAS project this year. She was able to recruit over twenty people from BISH to join her fundraising efforts and show support on the day of the walk.
Our team had a fundraising goal of $2,000 which all the members could contribute to online. While we hit some roadblocks along the way in terms of attempting fundraisers at school, we managed to surpass our goal the day after the walk. Members utilized social media and reached out to friends and family to encourage them to give to the cause.
After spending weeks fundraising, everyone was excited to be able to participate in the walk together.
"I think participating in that walk was one of the best activities I have done in a long time," said Juan R. "It was a very fun experience since I could help people who suffer from the disease and spend time with my friends. I really liked participating, not only because it counted as CAS, but because we could help many people who suffer from Alzheimer's. If I had the chance to do it again, I would. And I recommend everyone else to do it since it is something very fun that only takes two hours of your day."
Everyone completed the walk at a different pace, but we still managed to wait until each member had finished the 3.1 miles. Afterwards, we assembled to take a final group photo before team members had to leave. All the team members seemed to enjoy this chance to see each other outside the school and support a good cause by walking a few miles in nice weather.
"Organizing the walk to end Alzheimer’s wasn’t easy but I enjoyed every bit of it. Most of the work was already done, I just had to put together a team and get the word out," said Christina. "Working together with Mrs. Turner was a great help. We managed to raise 100% of our goal and about 25 people came out for the walk. All in all, it was an amazing experience for a great cause!’
