Event Roundup: What to Look Forward to This Weekend

Happy Friday! Stay warm and enjoy all the fun events taking place this holiday weekend, including: 

Eat Drink HTX
The second annual Eat Drink HTX, sister event to Houston Restaurant Weeks (HRW) produced by The Cleverley Stone Foundation, is underway. Eat Drink HTX, which continues through Feb. 28, has been developed for the casual dining category, with a lower price point set for prix fixe brunch, lunch, and dinner menus. Proceeds will benefit the Houston Food Bank and CHILDREN AT RISK. See participating restaurants here.

Weekend Two of Mardi Gras! Galveston
The good times will continue to roll in Galveston this weekend with parades, live music, and more. Head to Galveston or get a taste of the Mardi Gras fun with this homemade king cake.  

Rice Baseball Opening Weekend 
It’s Opening Weekend for Rice Baseball! The Owls take on Louisiana Friday, 6:30 p.m., Saturday, 2 p.m., and Sunday, 1 p.m. at Reckling Park. Many current Rice Baseball players grew up on local Little League fields. Read more here.

Enjoy a LGBTQ celebration at The Rink — Rolling at Discovery Green, Friday, 7-10 p.m. Guests will enjoy music by DJ Joe Ross, performances by local drag queens Angelina DM Trailz, Reign LaRue & Ericka Sanchez and the ultimate roller-skating dance party. Admission is free; skating fees apply. The Rink is open through March 17. 

21st Annual Rockets Run 
The 21st Annual Rockets Run, presented by Children's Memorial Hermann, takes place Saturday at Toyota Center, and includes a Kids 1K Run, a 5K Run, and a 2 Mil3.

George Washington’s Tent Visits Bayou Bend 
The Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia brings its replica of George Washington’s tent to Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens on Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Families are invited to enjoy a variety of activities, such as a scavenger hunt; an artist who makes commemorative silhouettes; storytelling; music by the Texas Army Fife & Drum Corps; poetry readings; and art projects for constructing peace medals and military drums. Tickets are $10 for adults and free for ages 18 and younger (limit of four child tickets per adult ticket).

Celebrate Black History Month at Children’s Museum Houston with a range of activities on Saturdays exploring African cultures and traditions and engaging in stories about courage, survival, and resilience.  

Black History Month Celebrations at Avenida Houston 
This month, there will be programing every weekend at Avenida Houston that will feature art, music, vendors, and educational activities that reflect and celebrate Houston’s rich diversity. Look forward to the BLCK Market and live entertainment on Saturdays, 2-6 p.m. 

Levy Park and Young Audiences of Houston invites families to honor Black History Month with Mrs. Twanda’s theater performance of ABIYOYO on Saturday, February 18.

ABIYOYO Performance with Twanda’s Theater at Levy Park  
Honor Black History Month with Mrs. Twanda’s theater performance of ABIYOYO on Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m. Audiences will dramatize a folktale story about a boy who plays the ukulele, a dad and his magic wand, and a hungry giant named Abiyoyo. The interactive performance will also compare and contrast African customs and traditions. 

XFL Roughnecks Season Opener
The XFL makes its return this weekend after the season was cut short in 2020 due to the pandemic. The Houston Roughnecks opens the season this Saturday, 7:30 p.m. as they take on the Orlando Guardians at TDECU Stadium. Tickets start at $24. Find the schedule and tickets here. 

Karbach's Rodeo Clown Roundup 2023
Karbach's Rodeo Clown Roundup this Sunday, 4-9 p.m., features live music and great beer. Lineup: Shane Smith & the Saints; The Steeldrivers; and Zac Wilkerson. General admission is $30; day-of: $35.

The opening night of ReelFilm features remarks from ReelAbilities Festival Chairs Diana Codispoti and Michael McCulloch and a screening of the award-winning documentary Amazing Grace.

ReelAbilities Houston Presents ReelFilm’s Opening Night
Join ReelAbilities Houston for the opening night of ReelFilm, Sunday, 7 p.m. The evening features opening remarks from festival chairs Diana Codispoti and Michael McCulloch and a screening of the award-winning documentary Amazing Grace. Grace Fisher was a brilliant musician, on her way to the world famous Berklee College of Music in Boston. At her 17th birthday party, she developed a severe pain in her spine. By the time she got to the hospital, she couldn't walk. By that night, she couldn't breathe. Grace Fisher was diagnosed as patient 101 with Acute Flaccid Myelitis (AFM), a rare polio-like disease, with no cure and no clear understanding of why this mysterious illness has ravaged the bodies of over 500 children in the US, most of them under the age of 7. Due to medical progress and the astounding strength and perseverance of this brilliant musician, Grace is able to live a rewarding life as a composer of sublime musical scores for full orchestras.
