México en el Corazón
Immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of Mexico with México en el Corazón, the internationally touring group of mariachis and ballet folklorico dancers. During the event, local Top Chef finalist, Evelyn Garcia, will “take over” the Lake House to serve a special, one-time only menu commemorating the night. More than 65 performers will create a magical night with beautiful costumes, music, and culture. The new Mexican Consul General, Maria Elena Orantes Lopez, will lead a reenactment of El Grito, which commemorates Mexican Independence Day. There will be a screen set up on Jones Lawn to allow for additional viewing areas. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs. The event takes place at Discovery Green on Friday, 7-10 p.m., and is free to attend.
DACAMERA Presents Lakecia Benjamin at Miller Outdoor Theatre
Dynamic saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin fuses traditional conceptions of jazz, hip hop and soul. Her electric presence and fiery sax work has inspired invitations to share the stage with legendary artists including Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, and The Roots. She performs at Miller Outdoor Theatre on Friday, 8 p.m. All performances at Miller are free.
Second Saturdays at Sawyer Yards
On the second Saturday of each month, the artists of Sawyer Yards open their studios to the public from 12-5 p.m. Spend the afternoon wandering through Sawyer Yards and discover an extensive selection of painting, sculpture, jewelry, photography, clothing, textiles, printmaking, mixed media, and more. Meet the artists and learn about their work. Second Saturday is free to attend and open to the public.
Gardening for Butterflies
Learn how to attract butterflies in your own backyard at this class led by instructor Kelsey Low at the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center. You’ll receive a list of native butterfly plants and the group will explore the Butterfly Bungalow. Wear comfortable walking shoes and clothes you wouldn’t mind getting dirty. The event takes place on Saturday, 10:30 a.m.-12::30 p.m. and is $35 for non-members. Ages 12+.
42nd Bayou Bucket Classic: UH Cougars vs. Rice Owls
The 42nd Bayou Bucket Classic, in which the UH Cougars take on the Rice Owls at Rice Stadium, will take place on Saturday, 6 p.m. This year's game will also be the first when both schools are in the first year of membership in a new conference as Rice begins play in the AAC and Houston in the Big 12 Conference.
Bank of America’s Screen on the Green: The Super Mario Bros. Movie
Enjoy a free family movie under the stars at Discovery Green. This Saturday, The Super Mario Bros. Movie (PG) will be screened at 7 p.m. The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023): Based on the Super Mario video games, the animated film follows Mario on his adventures with his friends. Mario joins forces with Princess Peach and Toad. The trio is in search of Mario's brother Luigi. Together, they hope to defeat the evil Bowser and save the Mushroom Kingdom from his destructive schemes.
"A Change Is Gonna Come" Starring Bradd Marquis And The Magnificents
The Music of Sam Cooke starring Bradd Marquis: A fantastic new show depicting the life and music of one of America’s most iconic and talented performers, the Legendary Sam Cooke, known as the inventor of soul music and the most popular performer of his time. The free performance takes place at Miller Outdoor Theatre on Saturday, 8 p.m.
The Singing Zoologist, All About the Hive: Celebrating Bees and Nature's Sweet Treats!
Celebrate Rosh Hashanah with Texas’ very own Singing Zoologist Lucas Miller. Starring author, songwriter, and YouTuber Lucas Miller, the event combines music with science, humor, and fun. Following the approximately 45-minute show, families will enjoy Rosh Hashanah themed crafts, apples and honey. The program takes place on Sunday at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the ERJCC, and is aimed toward kids 0-10 and their families. $10/members; $13/public.
Sugar Land Space Cowboys vs. Oklahoma City Dodgers at Constellation Field
Cheer on the Sugar Land Space Cowboys as they take on the Oklahoma City Dodgers at Constellation Field. The weekend's schedule includes Friday, 7:05 p.m.; Saturday, 6:05 p.m.; and Sunday, 2:05 p.m. Tickets start at $9. Houston Astros vs. San Diego Padres
The Houston Astros take on the San Diego Padres in a three-game series at Minute Maid Park. The schedule includes Friday, 7:10 p.m.; Saturday, 6:10 p.m.; and Sunday, 1:10 p.m. Tickets start at $33.
