Keeping Up with the Memorial Markettes

The heart of Memorial’s student body, the Memorial Markettes drill team, have recently entered their most highly anticipated season of the year: Spring Show! Annually, the Memorial Markettes end their year with their Spring Show, commemorating their hard work throughout the season and celebrating their seniors. This year’s theme is Keeping Up with the Markettes, which gives homage to the hit reality TV show Keeping Up with the Kardashians. This represents the increasing presence of the Markettes on campus! Keep reading to keep up with the Markettes and hear the ins and outs of being a member of the mustang drill team.
The Memorial Markettes are nothing if not diligent and persevering. The girls practice year-round, going through three different seasons: football, competition, and Spring Show. They rehearse every morning of the school week from 6:30 a.m. through the first period. These girls are also often balancing rigorous coursework and other sports and extracurricular activities as well. “It is a big commitment, but totally worth it,” says Social Chair Paige Lindsay. The Markettes embody the mustang way of hard work and excellenc, and do it with a smile on their faces. “Practice allows us to refine our skills and be the best we can. Some days are tough, but overall, being a Markette is such a rewarding experience that keeps me disciplined,” Lindsay explains.
With this, Spring Show is typically the Markette’s favorite season – it wraps up the year in a fun and celebratory way. Junior Lieutenant Myra Mock says that Spring Show is her favorite season by far because “it gives us a chance to show our family, friends, and Memorial community what we have been working on the entire year.”
Although the theme changes every year, some of the dances have remained a Memorial tradition, including the glow stick dance, boy’s dance, and traditional game day dance that have become fan favorites. Additionally, the Markettes share some of the spotlight with Memorial Dance Center’s youth program as well as Cornerstone Academy’s dance team, allowing the young dancers to have a glimpse into what their future may look like as a member of the Memorial drill team and share their talents with a new crowd.
Currently, in the midst of preparation for their Spring Show, Markettes are also preparing for their tryouts for the 2025-26 season. Veterans on the team have the opportunity to run for an officer position, both dance and social, as they are gearing up to be leaders on the team and at Memorial. Furthermore, the Markettes are holding their team tryouts in the upcoming weeks for next school year. This included the official Markette team as well as Minikettes, the underclassman team. For current and future Mustangs, this may be an opportunity to enter the world of dance and practice some school spirit!
Spring Show 2025 will take place the weekend of April 25-26, and tickets are available online. If you miss them this weekend, don’t worry, chances are you will spot a Memorial Markette around the neighborhood if not at Memorial football games and pep rallies. You won’t want to miss a chance at seeing these talented girls on or off the dance floor!
