The Buzz is proud to share that Ghost Bikes: White bicyclesmemorialize riders by Jennifer Oakley won second place in the “Magazine Article” category of the Houston Press Club’s 2016 Lone Star Awards. Winners were announced this weekend in the 2016 Lone Star Awards Banquet at Rice University. See all winners here.
Jennifer’s article, published in our September 2015 issue, features the white "ghost bikes," which memorialize the location in which a cyclist was killed and raise awareness for bike safety. Oakley's story sought out the loved ones and tragic endings behind local ghost bikes, as well as the volunteers who are compelled to create and maintain the memorials to each fallen cyclist. Read the article here and see what Buzz publisher Michael Hoffman had to say about this issue of The Buzz in his September 2015 Publisher’s Note.
Additionally, see Let’s Ride: Bicycling in Houston by Cheryl Ursin, also published in our September 2015 issue, on biking in Houston, which includes routes that seasoned cyclists recommend plus information for drivers about how to drive safely with cyclists on the road.
Congratulations to Jennifer on winning second place for Ghost Bikes.
