Mr. Hagans gets things done

As a Type 1 diabetic since 1968, I read your article about Type 1 diabetes [Tackling Type 1: When diabetes is part of the family, by Jennifer Oakley, September 2017] with great interest. One of the families mentioned was the Hagans. The article mentioned that the senior Mr. [Fred] Hagans has done a lot of pro bono work for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JRDF) over the years. However, the article did not mention, probably because Mr. Hagans did not bring it up, that he has also helped individuals with Type 1 who have faced discrimination in the workforce and schools. He has gone out of his way, stepped in and did what was needed to help and get the situation corrected.

Telling the other side of IVF

I read Annie’s article, IVF Journeys [Buzz Baby, by Annie Blaylock McQueen, September 2017], in The Buzz and looked at my kids, and for the first time in my life, I thanked God IVF didn't work. Of course, I wouldn't have minded it working, but seeing how it's playing out isn't so bad either.

Annie reached out to me about including us the article. She asked if I minded being in the article as the couple who IVF didn't work for. Now that my house is full of screaming babies, I can talk about it easier. Thank you, Annie, for including our story in this article to give couples like us hope when you feel like you are out of options.

This Back Porch in particular

Andria, I have to tell you how much I loved your Back Porch article [Harvey, Houston and Heart, by Andria Frankfort, October 2017] in the October Buzz. I felt like you were right on – capturing all of my thoughts as well as our awesome city. I enjoy your articles so much, and this one really spoke to me as it was such a devastating, sad storm for our city but yet Houstonians rose to the occasion and took care of each other. Thank you!

Buzz makes city smaller

Hey, is that you on the cover?

The feedback from the October issue was so fun and really demonstrated how close the Memorial community is. I had dozens of friends and family texting me saying how excited they were to see the cover [School Buzz: Meet our 2017-18 correspondents, by Jordan Magaziner Steinfeld, October 2017]! I’m so happy I was able to represent all the School Buzz writers. After two years with School Buzz and a summer internship, I’ve seen firsthand how The Buzz does such a great job of incorporating high schoolers in their publications and giving us a chance to play a role in our community. Thanks for all the opportunities!
