Recognizing a Semester of Success at the National English Honor Society’s Induction
The National English Honor Society held their induction for new and returning members on November 29. The Induction allowed all members to be honored for their recent admission or recognize their contributions to the National English Honor Society.
“As a returning member of NEHS it was really great to help out and induct all the new members. I have no doubt that everyone will continue to have a great time in NEHS,” senior Ayla Akin said.
Over the fall semester, students have been able to participate in several service opportunities such as being a pen pal and working on activity booklets for children in hospitals to enjoy.
Members were given the opportunity to become a pen pal of an elementary school student at Treasure Forest Elementary. The written relationship between the students of Memorial and Treasure Forest has been a long standing activity offered for NEHS hours.
Members are tasked to write in proper letter format and grammar in order to exemplify how to write a letter for the kids. Students ask a series of questions regarding their favorite things to learn about their pen pals and show the kids proper fundamental english.
“I love being a pen pal because I love writing to the kids and getting to know them,” junior Madison Ramke said. “They’re so sweet and excited to get to know us. It feels good to know we are not only helping these kids by showing them good writing but also being a source of joy for them.”
“Being a pen pal has been a really fun experience. I’ve loved getting to talk to my pen pal Sam,” junior Hana Cochinwala said.
The Honor Society’s pen pals were given the unique opportunity to meet their penpals at Treasure Forest’s Literacy Fair this past Halloween. Students at Treasure Forest held a Literacy Fair on Halloween to promote reading to the young children. The elementary students were presented with free books varying in languages and length. Students Katherine Prewett, Lauren Chang, Gabby Dastmalchain, Katherine Feruzzo, and myself all ran the table distributing books to the kids. The kids dressed in their Halloween costumes and excitedly approached our table to choose their books.
“Being able to volunteer at the Literacy Fair and meet my pen pal was great!” junior Gabby Dastmalchain said. “It was nice to be able to put a face to the little girl I’ve been writing back and forth with for the past few months!”
The pen pal program is only one of several amazing things that the National English Honor Society does. Following their successful induction, NEHS will continue to carry their service through the spring semester as well.
