Sticking around Houston for Spring Break? Enjoy your stay-cation with some of these fun activities happening around town during break!
Buffalo Bayou Partnership Regatta (March 9, 7:30 a.m.-2 p.m.)
Texas’ largest canoe and kayak race is back for its 47th year! Paddlers, both competitive and non-competitive, are invited to participate in a 15-mile race along Buffalo Bayou. And all are invited to spectate (for free)!
Children’s Museum Xtreme Spring Break (March 9-17)
Visit the Children’s Museum during break to explore five different Xtreme zones: Bungee Trampolines, Human Hamster Balls, a Sticky Ball Arena, a Kids Hall Carnival and S.E.C.R.E.T. – a spy interactive game. And don’t miss out on Pi Day, March 14th, when the museum will host a shaving cream pi(e) fight!
Sawyer Yards Second Saturday (March 9, 12-5 p.m.)
On the second Saturday of the month, spend the afternoon wandering Sawyer Yards’ studio buildings, and discover an array of paintings, sculptures, jewelry, photography, clothing and mixed media. Meet the artists, learn about their work and buy a new piece for your collection or for a friend!
Unplugged at Discovery Green (March 10, 5-9 p.m.)
Calling all music-lovers! Visit Discovery Green for a unique acoustic concert by Houston’s own Matt Harland, a troubadour who has won multiple songwriting accolades. Bring your blankets and lawn chairs. Food, beer and wine are available for purchase onsite.
Spring Break at the MFAH (March 11-15)
Enjoy a range of special Spring Break family-friendly activities at the Museum of Fine Arts’ Main Campus, Rienzi and Bayou Bend, open all week long! Explore exhibitions on view, including Vincent van Gogh: His Life in Art; Sally Mann: A Thousand Crossings; and Odyssey: Jack Whitten Sculpture 1963–2017, take in a movie on the big screen or enjoy workshops in art-making or photography. Note that there’s free general admission to the Museum on Thursday.
DIY Downtown with Pop-Shop America (March 13, 6:30-8:30 p.m.)
Join Pop Shop America at Social Graces Social Club for a workshop where you’ll make your own Indigo dyed tea towels! You’ll learn how to use the Shibori Dyeing Technique and how to create an ombre pattern. This event is 21+ only, and both Local Foods and Phoenicia will be onsite providing light bites for you to munch on as you craft.
Spring Break Spectacular (March 9-16, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.)
Visit Blessington Farms for a day of strawberry picking, hay rides, animal encounters, gem mining and more! The farm is open all Spring Break and offers activities the whole family can enjoy.
Levy Park’s Spring Break Activities (March 9-17)
Levy Park has an action-packed spring break planned, with yoga classes, children’s bingo, family story time and more!
Spring Break at the Ranch: The Family Challenge (March 9-16)
Bring your family out to George Ranch Historical Park to learn about a range of historic activities and then put your family’s pioneer skills to the test in the family ranch challenge. Activities include learning to build a log cabin, cooking with hot coals, starting a fire with flint and steel and much more!
Attend a Rockets Game (March 11, 13, 15, 17)
With NBA Playoff season fast-approaching, be sure to go support the Houston Rockets at one of their upcoming home games! The Rockets play the Hornets on March 11, the Warriors on March 13, the Suns on March 15 and the Timberwolves on the March 17, so there are lots of games to choose from!
Journey Through Japan (March 11-15, 12-3 p.m.)
Learn about Japan through a series of Spring Break activities and movie screenings at the Asia Society! Each weekday features a different activity ranging from origami making to creating Onigiri (rice balls) and Bento Boxes. All activities are free and kid-friendly!
Spring Break Escape at Memorial City (March 11-15, 5-9 p.m.)
Memorial City is a hub of spring break activity, with evening events happening every weeknight, followed by a movie screening. Enjoy activities like Mascot Olympics, a Luau Party and Circus Night followed by screenings of Zootopia, Moana and Madagascar 3.
The Rink – Rolling at Discovery Green (daily through April 21)
The outdoor roller rink at Discovery Green is open all Spring Break, and it has weekly theme nights like “Superhero Saturdays”— where you can skate with characters like Captain Marvel and Buzz Lightyear – and “Funfetti Fridays,” where a live DJ and light show make for a fun Friday night.
GUST at Discovery Green (through March 20)
Discovery Green presents GUST: Celebrating a Decade of Discovery, a unique, interactive piece of art by Mexico City-based design collective Cocolab. The piece is only on display through March 20 so Spring Break is a great time to check out this kinetic field of color! It’s on view daily during normal park hours and lights are activated nightly from dusk through midnight.
