Event Roundup: What to Look Forward to this Weekend
Happy Friday! We hope you enjoyed your Fourth of July festivities and are ready for a fun weekend ahead. Here's what's happening around town:
Friday Night Fireworks
Enjoy music-themed fireworks every Friday night in July at Kemah Boardwalk! The firework show starts at 9:30 p.m. and is free to the public. You can also view the show on Boardwalk Beast Fireworks Cruise, with tickets sold at $40.
Chalk on The Block
Head down to Bagby Park on Saturday to see amazing chalk art at Chalk on the Block. Held every first Saturday of the month, this event features highly-skilled chalk artists creating immersive designs in line with the month’s theme. July’s theme is “I Love the 90s.” The event, which will take place from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., is free to attend and will feature local food trucks and music from DJ Michele.
Professional Sandcastle Building
Every Saturday from now through the end of August, visitors to East Beach in Galveston can take free sandcastle-building lessons from a professional sandcastle builder! Lessons will be held from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., near the water's edge, straight down from the East Beach Pavilion. Registration is not required.
Nature Discovery Center Tree ID Walk
Enjoy the Nature Discovery Center’s free Tree ID Walk on Saturday morning from 10-11 a.m. with Master Naturalist and tree lover, Jim McKee. He will be teaching how to identify the trees that live in Russ Pitman Park. No registration is required; the group will meet in front of the NDC Saturday morning.
Houston Soul Food Festival
The Zone on Stella Link is hosting the one-day-only Houston Soul Food Festival this Saturday from 12 p.m.- 6 p.m. The event will feature vendors from across Texas selling iconic southern dishes like pork chops, oxtails, candied yams, and barbecue, as well as other items like jewelry and clothing. Tickets start at $10.
KPop Night Market at Stomping Grounds
KCity Events is hosting a free celebration of all things KPop at the Stomping Grounds in Garden Oaks this Saturday from 3 p.m.-8 p.m. Food will be available from popular spots like Oh My Gogi, Rooster & Rice, Fat Cat Creamery, and more. Festivities will include vendor booths selling art and accessories, raffles, music, dancing, and more for the whole family to enjoy.
Houston Botanic Garden Family Scavenger Hunt
The Houston Botanic Garden is hosting “Summer Saturday Evenings” as part of their Summer Extended Hours program. Every Saturday from 5-8 p.m., the Garden will organize family scavenger hunts where kids of all ages can learn more about nature. Tickets are available for purchase online, and general admission for the family scavenger hunt is $15 for adults and $10 for children and students.
Summer Nights at the MFAH
Kick off the first weekend of July with the first Summer Nights at the MFAH event. Every Saturday in July, the MFAH will extend its evening hours from 6-9 p.m., and give visitors a chance to go behind the scenes with curators. Entry includes one complimentary drink per ticket and access to all exhibitions. Each week will feature live music and vendors; this weekend features music from Chad Wesselkamper Jazz Trio and Moores School of Music, as well as a trunk show of rare and vintage kimonos from Tina Zulu of Kimono Zulu. Tickets are $40 per person; admission is free for MFAH members.
Legends of Country ft. Houston Symphony at Miller Outdoor
On Saturday night at Miller Outdoor Theatre, the talented Houston Symphony will accompany singers Patrick Thomas (The Voice) and Rachel Potter (The X Factor) to pay tribute to some of the most iconic country singers, including greats like Johnny Cash, Kenny Rogers, and Faith Hill. The performance starts at 8:30 p.m.; tickets are free but covered seating is limited.
Family Art-Making Studio at MFAH
The Museum of Fine Arts invites families to join them for a lesson from visiting artist Tyler Allen this Sunday from 1-2:30 p.m. Families will learn about technique and create a piece to take home. The event is geared towards families with children ages 5-12, and will take place in the classroom on the lower level of the Law Building. Tickets are $10 per person, plus the cost of museum admission ($24 for adults, free for those 12 and under).
Houston Caribbean Festival at Independence Park
Independence Park is hosting a Caribbean Festival and Parade of the Bands for all ages to enjoy on Sunday from 2-10 p.m. There will be colorful costumes and passionate performances from Samba dancers, Reggae Bands, stilt walkers, live music, and much more. Tickets are available to purchase online and start at $25.
LAFC at Houston Dynamo
This Sunday at 7:30 p.m., the Houston Dynamo will face off against the Los Angeles Football Club in the Shell Energy Stadium. LAFC currently holds the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference while the Dynamo is at 6th. Tickets start at $25 and are available from Seat Geek.
