On Wednesday evening, Memorial High School hosted their Junior Varsity relays meet. The track team has been practicing since the beginning of the year, and their efforts are paying off. The girl’s team alone set over 30 personal records in the meet.
The meet kicked off with the JV girls’ sprint medley relay. Memorial’s relay team consisted of Brooke Brenton and Sloane Wetzel running the 200m, Parker Oliver running the 400m and Sarah Adams running the 800m. Athletes from St. Agnes Academy, Strake Jesuit College Preparatory, Elsik High School, Seven Lakes High School and Northbrook High School all arrived to compete.
Earlier in the school year, Memorial’s cross-country team won second place in the district meet and went on to run at the state meet. Many of the runners have returned to run track in the longer events, such as the 3200m or 1600m.
“This has been a really good season because the schools we’ve been competing with have very talented athletes which make me push myself,” junior Laura Carrasco, who ran the 3200m and the 1600m, said. “I have improved a lot through this season and hope to get even better.”
Since the beginning of the season, only two weeks ago, athletes have improved tremendously, and will continue to do so as the hard work continues. The varsity team attended the Crusader Relays at Strake Jesuit during the morning of Feb. 23 and attended the Bubba Fife Relays on March 2.
